Joe maintains a busy composition schedule, writing music for his trio, quintet and the Bennetts Lane Big Band. In addition to composing for jazz ensembles, Joe also has experience writing for string quartet, piano quintet, chamber choir and solo piano. His most recent work, Confluence, was premiered by the Monash Art Ensemble as a part of its Histories program on October 3rd at the ABC's Iwaki Auditorium. It was recorded by the ABC for later broadcast on Jazz Up Late presented by Gerry Koster. The piece explores notated and improvised counterpoint derived by dividing the ensemble into contrasting groups of instruments that move with different degrees of melodic animation. It draws structural links between traditionally notated and improvised sections using a combination of text instruction, semi-structured notation and graphic information.
Joe is currently writing new music for his trio, for solo piano, and a set of three short pieces for the Penny String Quartet.
